Tanglewood

Yesterday we drove to Austerlitz, NY, camped at a very woodsy campground in the Berkshires, and drove the twisty, but not too many, miles to Lenox, MA and Tanglewood. It was a totally wonderful experience. We got there at about 5:30 with time to see the grounds and to have pizza and strawberry shortcake before the 8:30 start time. The weather was perfect.

The concert was a gala titled Tanglewood on Parade, and featured THREE orchestras:

The Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos. They played Vaughan-Williams' Serenade to Music, and Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg with 16 solo voices.

The Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra played Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture after Shakespeare.

After intermission was the Boston Pops Orchestra conducted by John Williams, playing his Sound the Bells and a Suite from his ET The Extra Terrestrial.

The last piece was performed by the Tanglewood Orchestra and the BSO, the 1812 Overture, complete with canon. The whole event was followed by fireworks.

What an evening!

We decided to get tickets in The Shed - the largest performance pavilion on the grounds, but many many people sat on the lawn in lawn chairs or on blankets.

This is a photo taken inside The Shed. Not very clear, but you might get the idea. Very big.

We enjoyed wine and strawberry shortcake in one of the many eating areas.
