Back in Mesa

We arrived in Mesa yesterday at about 3:30. We drove our tow vehicle - the trip took 3 days. On Friday we drove almost 700 miles. We hadn't really intended to drive that far. We intended to drive from Junction City, KS to Moriarty, NM, ( more like 600), but when we got to Moriarty we couldn't find the hotel we wanted, no cell service (i.e., data service) to draw a Google map, and so it just seemed easier to drive on to Albuquerque. It wasn't too bad and it made for a shorter drive the next day.

By the way, it has been a long time since we took a multi- day car trip. Definitely different from traveling in the motor home. We eat lunch, take rest breaks, etc., in the motor home, usually at rest stops along the Interstates or picnic areas along highways. We don't mingle, so to speak, with others - it's just easier and pleasant. But in a car, that is not what one does. Lunch for us is often at McDonalds or Burger King - fast and predictable (although not as healthy as the sandwiches and fruit I fix!) The benefit is seeing some local culture or fellow travelers which sometimes amazes. In Grants, NM, it was an adorable, bright Native American young woman working in the McDonalds at the casino - so cute and nice. In Holbrook, AZ, it was the two young guys, dudes, in McDonalds, who called over to two highway patrolmen eating lunch, about how to get to the Grand Canyon. They were from Ohio, on their way to Long Beach, CA, because they had heard California was great, and wanted to see the Grand Canyon on the way. One of the officers asked them what they were going to do once they got to Long Beach. They had no idea. But they knew it was going to be great.

So we are back in a warmer place. Gary rode his "good" bike today which we hauled on top of the car along with the kayak, and I had a lovely run at the Riparian Preserve with the birds and the desert flowers. We are expecting wind and not as nice tomorrow and Tuesday.
